Agree to Disagree

23 Feb

Mum had one of her walkabouts in the night.

I heard her up and about at 1.30 so I got up to investigate and she was fully dressed and making her bed. I found it really had to persuade her to go back to bed. I showed her how it was dark outside and there were no cars around but she just got argumentative. “We’ll just have to agree to disagree!” were her actual words.

I finally persuaded her to go back to bed but then she was up again at 3.30 and we went through exactly the same thing. I’d like to say I was extremely patient but the fact is that I was so tired I was probably a bit snappy with her.

I heard her get up again at 6.30 and this time I left her to it. When I got up at 8 a.m., she was (predictably) fast asleep in her chair!

I spoke to her about it later and she didn’t really remember what had happened in detail.

My husband’s Grandma had a stoke and then suffered from some dementia towards the end of her life. She would get up and get dressed in the middle of the night. She was always confused that her son was still asleep, so she would open and close the garage door until he heard it and woke up. These night-time behaviors are so strange…
