Mum is off to a New Year’s Day gathering at her friend, Norah’s. It’s only her two friends and their husbands but she is stressing about it from the moment she gets up. There used to be another friend, Grace, in their little group, but ironically Grace also has dementia and is no longer well enough to join in.
I take mum round at midday and leave her there. She seems quite happy but I arrange to pick her up at 1.30 as I know she will be tired by then.
When we get home she tells me she was bored anyway and they didn’t have sherry, only white wine which she doesn’t like!
I would always encourage her to go out when she is invited though. The opportunities will get less and less so we have to take advantage when we can.
